Section 1: Landforms of East Asia

1. Summarize the main ideas of this section found on page 689.
2. Answer the following question: East Asia is made up of highlands and lowlands. Why do you think most people live in the lowland areas?

  1. East Asia takes up much of the Asian continent. Some of the countries that lie on peninsulas are: North Korea, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. The Pacific Ocean, which is off of East Asia’s coast, makes an arc of mountainous islands. Japan, which is one of the mountainous islands, forms an archipelago. An archipelago is a chain of islands.

I think most people live in the lowland areas because it’s fertile. Fertile areas are good for farming. And if you are a farmer you are going to want fertile land. Another reason could be because they don’t want to be in the snow on the mountains. Some people don’t like high altitudes so that could turn you away from high land areas as well.

  2. East Asia has most of the Asian continent south of Russia. Some East Asian countries are North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Those countries all lie on peninsulas or islands. The South Asian mountain ranges and highlands slice through western East Asia. Most of East Asia’s population lives on some fertile lowland areas. An archipelago is a chain of island. On the Pacific Ocean, there is plate movement that causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

I think that most of the people would live on lowland because of the land. Most of their population lives in the lowlands. The land on the lowlands is fertile so most of the people would want to be there. Also, there are the Himalayas in the highland. The Himalayas average is about 15,000 feet in elevation. I wouldn’t want to live in a place that has that high of an elevation. So to answer the question, again, I think that most people would live in the lowlands.

  3. There are many main points, but a lot of them pertain to what occupies East Asia. Two countries that extend over most of East Asia’s land, is China and Mongolia. East of the mountains are their only two lowland areas, which are the North China Plain and the Manchurian Plain. Most people live in these two areas, because it is fertile. Off of East Asia’s coast there are mountainous islands.

I think most people would rather live in the lowlands, because there is fertile land and it is in good shape to use for farming. If you think about it, it is way warmer, here on the lowlands, and if you’re a farmer you want to be able to grow your crops. For the highland mountainous regions, there is no farming space at all. Some people do not like living in high altitudes. Another would be that some people dislike cold, snowy regions, and the highlands are just that.

  5. Noth Korea, Sout Korea, Japan, and Taiwan are located on peninsulas and islands. China and Mongolia extend over most of East Asia. Moutain ranges go through western East Asia. The tallest ranges are the Himalaya and the Kunlun Shan. Between those ranges, the Plateau of Tibet rises 15,000 feet, and it is also refered as the Roof of the World. Off of East Asia’s coast there is an archipelago which includes Japan. An archipelago is a chain of islands.

It might be too cold in the highlands to live. The lowland is much warmer. It would be harder to grow crops in the highland. The lowland probably has more fertile soil. The rivers are in the lowland areas, and most people live near rivers or some type of a water source.

  6. East Asia covers a plentiful amount of the Asian continent south of Russia. In between the mountains of Himalayas and Kunlan Shan is the Plateau of Tibet. Along the coast of the Korean Penninsula is narrow lowlands. Off the coast of East Asia is mountainous islands. It creates an archipelago, a chain of islands, off the southeastern coast of China.

I think people live in the lowland areas for many reasons. The lowland is closer to the ocean, making it easier to fish. The highland area would make it harder to grow crops, and harder to keep their livestock. The lowlands could also be warmer, creating it easier to grow their crops for food and money. And that is why people often choose to live in the lowland areas.

  7. 1. In this section it talks about the landforms of East Asia. China and Mongolia are the countries that spread over much of East Asia’s landforms. Mountain ranges and highlands cut through western East Asia. North China Plain, and the Manchurian Plain these are the major lowlands of East Asia. Off the coast of East Asia there is an arch or chain of islands.
    2. Most people probably live on the lowlands because they can grow crops better in lowlands. They would probably have a better chance at growing crops. Another as to why they would want to live there is because you can probably raise animals better in a lowland vs. in a highland.

  8. East Asia consists of mountains, islands, plateaus, and plains. The mountains here are the Himalaya’s and the Kunlun Shun. Between these mountains lies the famous Plateau of Tibet. It is nicknamed the roof of the world. In the Pacific Ocean lies a chain of islands known as an Archipelago. These islands were formed a long time ago by volcanic activity. These islands are part of the ring of fire, where tectonic plate movements and earthquakes cause volcanoes to erupt.
Most people live in the lowlands because they are cooler. It may also be due to more grass for livestock. The lowlands would probably have more water also. The plateau is so high that it may have water it has flowing off the sides.

  9. 1. East Asia covers a great amount of land below Russia. The countries that are a part of East Asia are China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Thailand. The tallest mountain ranges are the Himalaya and the Kunlun Shan. The Plateau of Tibet is found between the tallest mountains ranges in this area. The Plateau of Tibet’s height is 15,000 feet high. Most of East Asia population lives in the lowlands of the region. An archipelago is a chain of mountains. The archipelago in East Asia is Japan and Taiwan.
    2. Most people live in the lowlands instead of the highlands. The highlands are really cold, and you wouldn’t be able to plant crops. The lowlands are warmer and they have fertile soil so it would be a great place to live and be able to grow crops. You wouldn’t want to live in the highlands because there wouldn’t be a good source of food like there is in the lowlands. Lowlands you wouldn’t have to go a lot of places to get food like you probably would in the highlands. That is why more people live in the lowlands instead of the highlands.

  10. East Asia makes up most of the Asian continent this is located south of Russia. The countries that make up East Asia is North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. These countries lie on peninsulas or islands. The tallest mountain ranges that are in East Asia are the Himalaya and the Kunlun Shun. Between these two mountains is where the Plateau of Tibet is located.

The reason why the population mostly lives in the lowland areas is because the lowland has better and more fertile land. But they do not all live in the lowlands they can also live on archipelagos which are small chains of islands. One of the countries that is an archipelago is Japan. East Asia's islands also make up part of the ring of fire.

  11. Mongolia and china cover most of East Asia. Several mountain ranges come across this region. The tallest ranges here are the Himalaya and the Kunlun Shan. Off of East Asia’s coast in the Pacific Ocean lie mountainous islands. These islands include Japan and Taiwan.
People live in lowland areas for many reasons. One is because it’s easier to get around. Trading is simpler because you don’t need to go over mountains. Another reason is because you can’t grow crops on mountains. You can’t find flat land and it’s too much rocks.

  12. East Asia and Southeast Asia consists of mountain areas and oceanic areas. Most of the countries here lie on peninsulas or even islands (North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan)! The highest mountain ranges, here in this region, are the Himalayan Mountains and the Kunlun Shan. The Plateau of Tibet has an elevation of 15,000 feet! It is so high that it is nicknamed, the Roof of the World.

The reason most of East Asia's population lives in the lowland areas, of this region, is because there is more fertile land. With more fertile land, East Asia can grow more crops and raise more livestock.

  13. 1. The East Asian countries include North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The tallest ranges are the Himalayas and the Kulun Shan. Most of East Asia’s population lives on fertile lowland areas. Japan forms an archipelago, which is a chain of islands. East Asia has mountain ranges and highlands are in western part of East Asia. East Asia’s islands are part of the Ring of Fire. The Plateau of Tibet is 15,000 feet tall and since it is so high it is called the “Roof of the World". It covers much of the land south of Russia. China and Mongolia extends much over East Asia’s landmass. Most of the population lives in the lowlands.
    2. I think most people like living on the lowlands because The highlands are colder than the lowlands and temperature could be a factor. I think it can also be farming because of land.

    Section 1
There are 6 countries in East Asia. They are called China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Mongolia and China cover most of East Asia’s land mass. North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan lie on peninsulas or islands. The highest ranges include the Himalayas and the Kunlun Shan.
The only major lowlands in East Asia are the North China plain and the Manchurian Plain. Most of East Asia’s population lives on the Korean Peninsulas for its rich soil. Most people probably live in this are to make crops and warmer temperatures. In the higher areas it is probably colder and harder to live up there. They might not be able to grow food up there and might not be able to keep livestock up there.

  15. Korea, and Taiwan. China and Mongolia extend over most of East Asia. The other countries, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan lie on either peninsulas or islands Six countries cover this area. They are China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South. The tallest mountain ranges are the Himalaya and the Kunlun Shan and in between lays the Plateau of Tibet, which rises 15,000 feet and is also called Roof of the World.
Most people live in the lowland plains because in the highlands it is very mountainous. Also in the lowlands it is very fertile and it may be too cold to live in the highlands. The only major lowland areas in East Asia are the China Plain and the Manchurian Plain. There are also narrow lowlands that line the coast of the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
